The Power of Persuasion

Masters English is proud to introduce its newest course designed for pupils who are about to graduate as well as university students. We would like to invite you all to join the Masters English debate club.

In the United States, debate teams, clubs and societies have a long and proud tradition. Debate is a useful skill because it helps you verbally compare and contrast ideas. It promotes logical thinking, assertiveness, and eloquence.

All debate begins with a resolution, essentially a statement that one side in the debate must prove to be correct while the other side attempts to prove that it is incorrect.

One example could be: Resolved; participating in a debate club increases self-confidence when speaking.

At this point, the affirmative team must demonstrate why and to what extent they believe this statement to be correct. The contra team must use the same skills to show why they believe the statement is false.

Each team employs rhetorical devices and logic to build up a convincing argument. They use their powers of persuasion and passion to sway the jury over to their side. And in doing so, they have a lot of fun!
This country is about, in my judgment, aggressive, open debate. There is an old saying: When everyone is thinking the same thing, no one is thinking very much.
