English for Specific Purposes (ESP) – A Case Study!

On this website, you will hear us talk a lot about ESP courses. Without going into too much theory about what ESP means, Masters English offers you the following case study.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

In April 2016, Masters English was asked to design English courses for a private organization responsible for providing seminars and workshops to civil servants and other employees in the public sector. The influx of refugees and seasonal workers has created situations at local town halls where clerks simply do not feel comfortable explaining somewhat complicated procedures and regulations to customers in English.

Masters English listened carefully to what our client wanted.

At the end of a series of email and face-to-face meetings, it was agreed that potential participants would provide Masters English with a list of terminology and phraseology relevant to facilitate communication at a highly professional level.

Participants were asked to take a placement test to ensure the highest amount of homogeneity for the groups.

Masters English also asked the participants for a detailed description of the relevant administrative processes that needed to be explained to the customers simply and correctly.
The vocabulary and phrases were translated as were the processes. In the next step, the processes were broken down into shorter segments that are easier to explain and understand. These elements now provide a valuable source of learning opportunities for the participants.

In the next step, Masters English asked the participants to describe common real-life scenarios that have to be mastered in English. Based on these scenarios, the translated vocabulary, and the simplified explanations of complicated processes, Masters English was able to put together a syllabus that covered those critical situations.

Over the summer, Masters English will continue to develop pedagogical material and design communicative tasks so that when the first courses begin in September 2016, the participants can enjoy a relevant, challenging, and rewarding learning experience.

As good teaching is only as good as the thought that goes into it and the post-teaching analysis, we will keep you up to date on how things have gone and how we can improve things for the next round of courses.
